およそ17年ぶりのことだ。女王は2003年10月、ロンドンのキングエドワード7世病院で右膝の手術を受けた。手術の翌日に退院した際には、頑丈な杖を使用していた。

退院してからの女王はサンドリンガムの私邸で療養生活に入り、2週間後には木製の杖を使用して現地で行われた礼拝に出席した。その数日後には調整可能な杖を使いながら、サンドリンガムの敷地内に設置されたブロンズ製のゲートの除幕式に出席した。そして2004年1月には、今回と同じ杖を持って歩く姿が目撃されている。

今回の礼拝で女王が使用した杖について、ロンドンを拠点とする「Walking Sticks ＆ Walking Canes」のオーナー、ポール・シモンズ氏は「珍しい取っ手が付いています。使い心地が良いようで、女王がこのような機会に歩く時の杖のようですね」と『Daily Mail Online』に解説している。
